I LOVE your writing! OMG
the gift of a wonderful artist walking in the world!
Leigh, I loved your Sunday matinee (07-12-15) which exceeded my expectations, though it was not the show I envisioned when you sold me on it as we chatted in the Complex lobby late last month. Looking back on the Fringe program, WHY WATER FALLS didn’t attract me initially, as I combed and recombed my potential ticket list to make it manageable. With a gloomy-sounding log-line and an abstract-sounding title evocative to YOU but not to ME, I passed it over. Having now seen the show, I understand the appeal of WHY WATER FALLS to you, but, objectively, I would have more attracted if you had given it a more personal label—for example, I DON’T WANT TO WRITE ABOUT THIS, or WHY I DON’T WANT TO WRITE ABOUT THIS. That would have intrigued me—and perhaps others. A Word to The Wise…
I note that the Fringe program lists the show at 95 minutes, when what I saw was about 15 minutes shorter (but certainly long enough). Did you edit while it was being performed during your June dates? Inquiring Minds Want to Know!
PS Sorry I missed you 50 years ago in HOW NOW DOW JONES, which is one of my favorite unknown musicals!
Thanks for your thoughts, Charles – I’m so glad you made it to Why Water Falls and that your expectations were exceeded. Thanks, also, for your thoughts on the title – your point is very well taken. The show was 95 minutes when we were rehearsing which was when we had to tell the Fringe how long the show was – but as the lines moved from my head into my bones the lines came faster and so did the life underneath them so the running time got shorter. If you saw How Now, Dow Jones you saw me in the chorus – I was in it for the entire run – understudied Brenda Vaccaro and, in the process, got my Equity Card. Thanks again for getting in touch – Best, Leigh
